The fun of a little man...

Every day is a new adventure. Yesterday, he tells me as I am cleaning, "mommy, don't go into the bathroom." Ok, I know that when he says that, I better drop everything and go to the bathroom.  As I am hurrying my way there, he says, "no mom. don't go in there.'  I have visions of a flooded bathroom... instead, I walk in to find this

I was trying not to laugh...I asked him what in the world was he doing as soap suds were spilling out of the sink and running down to the floor.  "I was washing dishes, mommy."  There were no dishes in the sink, thankfully. He did manage to use about 3/4 of the hand soap...but I guess the bright side is, he knows what goes into washing dishes and wants to help!  He loves to help me with things around the house - he loves to vacuum and INSISTS on doing it.  I love it that he wants to help.

We have also found a new love...paint.  He LOVES to paint. He painted this VBS project the night he didn't go...(its the cross with shells on it)

He loves to paint on the paper and we have been finding everything we can to paint these days. It was so hot yesterday, we stayed inside and played with his trains, Lego's, read books and of course, painted.  He worked on the plant holder he made for me for mother's day...the project he did at Home Depot - he got to use a hammer and nails with daddy's help and he had a blast!

He asked if he can paint this plant holder again today.

We are also reading a book (or 4) before nap time.  Today he chose to read about the 8 bags of gold, Rosie, the adopted dog, and last he chose to read a book about colors and shapes. The book about colors and shapes is really a workbook.  He did really well with it - identifying all the colors, all the shapes...and then we got to a page that has a sequence and you have to fill in the last block with what comes next in the sequence.  For example, the first one is a row with a yellow square, then a red triangle, then a yellow square, then a red triangle, then a yellow square and the last box is empty and you have to draw what goes in that box.  Well since we were just reading the book, I asked him what went in that square. He said a red triangle.  There were 6 sets of these on this one page, each line a different shape and color combo...I was soooo proud of him...he got every single one of them right.

I am trying to stay ahead of him and keep challenging him...he's learning so quickly and his comprehension amazes me. He also has recall that seriously shocks me. He's fun - he has had a really good week - we have had a really good week.  We did go get his haircut yesterday...my all time favorite thing to do!  This is a bit traumatic for him...so he sits on my lap, and well, yesterday refused to wear the drape. It was a super slick satin-like fabric and he went nuts. That's not an SPD that we always have issues with - only twice we've had it, and he seemed to have gotten over that. Until yesterday.

One thing I am noticing more and more of is noises...he climbed in my lap yesterday when the dishwasher was running and it cycled to the next phase, he came over to me crawled up me, threw his arms around my neck and said it was really loud and scary.  What do I do when that happens?  Wrap my arms around him, hold him tight, acknowledge his fear and what he is saying, giving him credit for what he hears - I don't hear it, but he does. It doesn't matter what I think - I need to respond to him and his need just as if I hear it too. He calmed down after I explained what it was and we sat together (at a distance) and listened to it until he was ok with it.

Well I guess this is all over the place - but a good place to stop for today. Tomorrow I want to talk more about support and offer a list of books that we have found helpful as well as websites, videos...

Until then, I have some things to do before our next adventure begins!
